Annual Candlelight Service
The Candlelight Service continues despite Covid protocols in place.
December 17, 2021
The traditional Candlelight Service was held in Moseley Chapel on Sunday, December 12, 2021. Ten students participated in reading selections of work from the Bible’s Old Testament and Buddhist Dhammapada to a Diwali prayer and Unitarian Universalist piece. The First sang ten Christmas carols and the attendees were encouraged to join in singing.
A long-held tradition at the Academy, the Candlelight Service celebrates various beliefs with the
recitation of passages from diverse cultures and religions. The service ends with the iconic ceremonial lighting of the candles, with all attendees joining together in passing on the light first ignited by the Quimbys. The ceremony symbolizes light overcoming darkness, encapsulating the central idea of various festivals from Christmas to Hanukkah during December’s holiday season.
The service was followed by the Holiday Feast in which formal dress was required.
